Sponsored Programs Funding


The following sources of funding information are applicable to faculty seeking funding in many subject areas. Most searchable databases and funding organization web sites enable users to establish a profile and receive information via email, based upon their preferences.

Many also send out electronic newsletters, funding alerts and other forms of regular communication. Some funding databases contain faculty profiles – a useful tool for identifying potential collaborative partners. You should also consult your campus research office to learn about internal funding opportunities and other forms of assistance.

Public Funding Sources

Federal Government:

A central storehouse for information on more than 1,000 grant programs that provides access to approximately $400 billion in annual awards. The site allows researchers to find, apply for and access federal funding opportunities.

AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science)
A searchable database of funding opportunities in biomedical research and science education. The site offers tools and resources to help customize a search to quickly find needed information, stay up to date with the latest trends in research and education funding, and assist in writing winning grant applications.

The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance
A searchable database of federal programs. The site provides program contacts, links to on-line applications and offers proposal development assistance.

Proposal Central
An e-grantsmaking website shared by many government, non-profit, and private grant-making organizations.


State Government:

Grants Gateway
The Grant Opportunity Portal is online and available to the public, providing a one-stop shop for anyone interested in locating grant funding opportunities with State agencies. The Grantee Document Vault is also available, allowing existing grantees and potential applicants to store key organizational information in a single secure online location for use by all State agencies.

The New York State Foundation for Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR)
Publishes a Funding Opportunity Newsletter that provides information on Federal, State and non-profit funding opportunities to encourage and expand high-technology academic research and economic development in New York State.

New York City Health and Human Services (NYC HHS) Accelerator
A website with a list of contracting opportunities through The City of New York for providers that deliver direct health and human services to clients and communities. The system links to online application completion and RFP submission.


Private Funding Sources

The Foundation Center
Offers searchable databases of foundation, corporation, association and charitable organization funding opportunities. Information is both free and fee-based. The Foundation Center also offers resources and publications such as the Philanthropy News Digest.


Searchable Databases

This website provides a working example of how a multi-institutional search functions, allowing you to search across all seven partner institutions and across all disciplines to find people and information that could dramatically impact your work. 

INFOED’s Sponsored Program Information News (SPIN)
A searchable database of more than 2,500 sponsor agencies and more than 11,000 separate funding opportunities from federal, non-federal and international sources.

Illinois Research Information Service (IRIS)
A searchable database containing more than 9,000 active federal and private funding opportunities in the sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s Guide to Grants
A searchable database of foundation, corporate, and nonprofit grants listed in The Chronicle of Philanthropy since 1995. It contains information on hundreds of thousands of grant listings. On average, more than $200-million in new grant listings are added to the database every two weeks.

Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tool (RePORT)
The Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tool provides access to reports, data, and analyses of NIH research activities, including information on NIH expenditures and the results of NIH-supported research. RePORT provides frequently requested information and links to major sections of the site, including NIH strategic plans, reports on NIH funding, and reports on the organizations and people involved in NIH research and research training.

Provides information on grant application status, research spending and results data, a policy library, and the latest research news for NSF and the US Department of Agriculture. Other agencies and features including PI profiles, online tools to submit progress and financial reports, sub-award searches and electronic fund disbursement will be added in the future.
