Joy Goswami took responsibility for leading SUNY system-wide strategies for technology transfer, IP management, and commercialization in February 2025. With over 15 years of experience, he has held senior leadership roles at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Delaware. A USPTO-registered Patent Agent and Registered Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP), he serves as Chair of AUTM, the global association for academic technology transfer.

Joy has played a key role in commercializing disruptive innovations emerging from university research—ranging from therapeutic drugs and vaccines to smart device technologies, AI-driven platforms, advanced materials, and sustainable engineering applications. He regularly advises on startup development and national commercialization programs and serves as a reviewer for NIH’s SBIR/STTR initiatives.

A well-regarded figure in the tech transfer community, he is frequently invited to speak at national and international forums on innovation, entrepreneurship, and the societal impact of academic research.

Peter Fallon brings an extensive background in pharmacy and law to the Research Foundation. In his role as life science IP attorney, Peter’s duties include patent portfolio development and patent prosecution, as well as providing strategic intellectual property counseling and opinions and supporting SUNY's technology-to-market strategy.

Prior to joining the Research Foundation in September 2022, Peter worked for more than two decades in private practice. He was a partner at Am Law 100 firm Locke Lord LLC for more than 13 years, where he managed clients’ patent portfolios and practiced Hatch-Waxman pharmaceutical patent infringement litigation.

Peter is a graduate of St. John’s University College of Pharmacy and School of Law (juris doctorate). His bar admissions include New York State and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Peter is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Lance Reich is a patent attorney working with physical science inventions created at SUNY's universities and colleges. He joined the Research Foundation in 2022 with a long career as a patent attorney in both public and private practice.

Lance helps to create, manage, and commercialize US and global patent portfolios in the electrical, computer, and general engineering areas, including semiconductor fabrication, robotics, AI and machine learning, autonomous systems, medical devices, and green technologies. He also assists with enforcement matters related to SUNY intellectual property.

Lance has a graduate degree in electrical engineering and computer science and worked as a software engineer while in graduate school. He is a registered US patent attorney, as well as a member of the Florida, Georgia, and Washington state bars.

An innovation leader and serial entrepreneur in the field of applied materials science, Karl-Heinz Schofalvi has been the business development manager for SUNY’s physical sciences portfolio since 2023. Customer-focused and market-driven, his duties in technology transfer span intellectual property protection to commercialization. In addition, he mentors startups seeking to bring SUNY technologies to the marketplace.

Karl-Heinz started his post-master's career at NASA-Glenn working on ceramic composites for the X-30, followed by five years in corporate R&D, specializing in shape forming for aerospace devices. He went on to become an innovation consultant, completing over 75 consulting jobs across the spectrum of metal, polymer, and ceramic manufacturing. The holder of 16 U.S. patents, Karl-Heinz founded and operated six startups, two of which were sold. His extensive startup founder experience benefits principal investigators and entrepreneurs within the SUNY system.

Ben Clark is a certified patent paralegal and certified administrative professional with over 17 years of in-house patent prosecution and portfolio management experience. He is responsible for managing the entire patent prosecution process -- from invention intake, federal compliance, and portfolio management to patent maintenance, docketing, and invoicing. Since joining the Research Foundation in March 2020, Ben, who is well versed in patent prosecution worldwide, has done much to increase capabilities and efficiencies and is consistently sought out for guidance regarding complex patent matters. He is a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Brittany Wade delivers technology transfer and commercialization services to SUNY faculty, staff, students, and external partners. She works directly with technology evaluation, assists with intellectual property prosecution, and upholds flow through channels between business development professionals, entrepreneurs, and inventors across the SUNY enterprise to move technology from invention disclosure to market.

Prior to joining the Research Foundation in 2023, Brittany worked in civil litigation as a paralegal after making a career shift from creating and hosting marketing campaigns for various companies. Brittany brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to the RF, continuously encouraging others to share the vision and mission of the organization.

Mahfuz Miah plays a pivotal role in managing intellectual property protection and commercialization across the life sciences and medical devices portfolio. Drawing on his background in biomedical research and neuroscience, Mahfuz serves as a translator between academic researchers and the legal and business worlds, guiding inventors through disclosure, patenting, and commercialization. He also negotiates key agreements such as Options, Licenses, IIAs, MTAs, and NDAs to support collaborative projects and market translation. He joined the Research Foundation in 2021.

A Certified Licensing Professional, Mahfuz is an active member of the Association of University Technology Managers, LifeSciencesNY, NewYorkBIO, and the Licensing Executives Society. Mahfuz is dedicated to advancing innovations that improve health outcomes and regularly collaborates with faculty, startups, and industry partners to bring new technologies to market.

Patrick Nelson is responsible for managing the intellectual property and commercialization strategies for a large portion of SUNY’s vast life sciences and chemistry technology portfolio. He brings marketing experience earned through 10 years staffing and managing election campaigns, public policy experience as a former staffer in the NYS Assembly and Senate, and entrepreneurial experience as a former co-founder of two funded biotechnology startups. Patrick, who joined the Research Foundation in 2022, is a Registered United States Patent Agent with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and biophysics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Austin Winter plays a key role in protecting and commercializing innovations across SUNY’s physical and computer sciences portfolio, which includes technologies in electrical and computer hardware/software, nanotechnology, semiconductors, and medical devices. A USPTO-registered Patent Agent and Certified Licensing Professional, Austin’s expertise spans a broad range of intellectual property areas, including patents, copyrights, trade secrets, mask works, and know-how.

Austin joined the Research Foundation in 2021. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physics and a master’s degree in engineering and management systems. Beyond his work with SUNY innovators, Austin is an active member of the Association of University Technology Managers and the Licensing Executives Society. He is committed to supporting the next generation of innovators, frequently volunteering at local business plan competitions and startup mentorship programs.
