Naming Standards for the Customer (Sponsor) and People Files

Purpose

This document provides naming standards to be used in the following files within the Oracle Applications at the Research Foundation:

Names

Proper names should be typed in mixed case (upper/lowercase).

  1. Abbreviations. Names should be spelled out in full. For people, first and last names should be spelled out in full, with middle initial (no punctuation).
    For the supplier file people's names should not be prefixed with "Dr.", "Mr.", "Mrs.", etc.

  2. Initials. Businesses that are more commonly known by their initials than by what the initials stand for should be input as initials. Examples:
  3. Punctuation and symbols. Do not use periods (. commas (,) apostrophes (')parentheses(()) or semicolons (;).

    Exceptions: People's last names may have apostrophes (') or hyphens (-), and businesses may use an ampersand (&), such as AT&T.
    Note: Do not put spaces before or after.

  4. Remove "the" at the beginning of a name.

  5. Government Entities. The first word should be the state, county, city, or locality. Note: Use the full name as given for private organizations.

  6. Remove spaces in people's last names.

All addresses should be typed in mixed case (upper/lowercase).
