Leadership Academy Public Speaking Modules


April

April 17 - 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. - Public Speaking Module 1: "Tell me about your work at the RF." (Two minutes each)

You will speak for two minutes to your peers telling them about “your work at the RF” 

  •  Well prepared & confident
  •  Be memorable & engaging
  • Delivered without notes but not rehearsed

May 10 - 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. - Public Speaking Module 2:  Extamporaneous speaking 

Speak with PowerPoint (or other file such as Prezi, etc.) but without prepared notes about your role in research administration at The Research Foundation for SUNY. (5 minutes)

  • Carefully prepared but delivered without notes or text
  • Work related presentation should focus on your role in research administration and could include a project, department initiative, uniform guidance, regulatory changes, etc.
  • Use time to “teach the audience” on a topic
  • Take questions from audience
  • Work with your mentor to prepare and rehearse for presentation

June

June 15 - 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. - Public Speaking Module 3:  Verbatim Speech

Full text and read verbatim on any topic. (5 minutes)

  • Speech can be written by presenter or borrowed material
  • Type should be large and spaced every other line
  • Use Public Speaking Tips to guide your presentation
  • Verbatim speeches are usually harder as they don’t come from the heart
  • Work with your mentor to prepare and rehearse for presentation

December 6 - Leadership Academy Graduation - 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. - Public Speaking Module 4:  Interview with Cathy Kaszluga about your project

Interview with Cathy Kaszluga, VP of Strategy & Planning about your Independent Project (10 minutes)

  • Use Public Speaking Tips to guide your presentation
  • Work with your mentor to prepare and rehearse for presentation
