Hotel and Motel Fire Safety Act

Purpose

This document describes the Hotel and Motel Fire Safety Act of 1990 and identifies the compliance requirements for the Research Foundation (RF).

Background

The Hotel and Motel Fire Safety Act was enacted on September 25, 1990. The purpose of the Act is to "save lives and protect property by promoting fire and life safety in hotels, morels, and all places of public accommodation affecting commerce."

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is responsible for administering the Act.

Effective Date

Although the Hotel and Motel Fire Safety Act was effective on September 25, 1990, the provision requiring use of places that meet the requirements of the guidelines described in the Act did not become effective until the initial publication of the National Master List in the Federal Register on November 29, 1993.
