RF Allocates Funds to SUNY Campuses
Each year the RF gives a portion of its funds to the SUNY campuses to support the SUNY research enterprise. Funds allocated to campuses come from:
- Indirect costs reimbursed to the campus (costs the RF recovers from grant and contract to faculty researchers/scholars for things like utilities and infrastructure)
- Investment income when applicable
- Royalties earned by an inventor’s campus, net of payments to inventors
- Fees paid by business/industry to use campus service centers
- Equity distribution from Brookhaven Science Associates
- Nonsponsored & other income
What the Data Shows
Page 7 of the RF’s annual Operating Plan presents the various board allocated uses of RF funds. Historical actuals are presented alongside projected amounts for future periods.

RF Funds are allocated to support campus operations and research. The Distance Mentored Undergraduate Research program enabled students at SUNY Plattsburgh to study plastic pollution in the Great Lakes with Dr. Sherri Mason, professor of chemistry at SUNY Fredonia. Mason’s research led to a congressional ban on the use of plastic microbeads in health and beauty products.
